Reimagining Profit: Innovative Revenue Streams for Auto Shops

Why Diversification Matters

In our latest Garage Grit episode, we rolled up our sleeves and dove into something that a lot of shop owners don't talk enough about: revenue beyond repair. I sat down with two sharp operators in the game—Tyson Fisher from Gainesville, Florida, and Bill Valele from Long Island, New York—to tackle how we can drive more profit by doing more than just turning wrenches.

Here’s the reality: there are slow months. In Gainesville, it’s June, July, and December. Up in New York? It's whenever the collision business dips. But instead of stressing, these guys are leveraging alternative revenue streams that buffer their bottom lines and keep their teams energized.

Creative Ideas That Work

Tyson, for example, has a sharp eye for salvage value. His shop buys junked Mercedes and strips usable parts, selling them or using them in repairs where new parts aren't available. Not only does it help customers with tight budgets, it also builds goodwill and long-term trust.

Bill, on the other hand, is big on training. Not just for his techs, but for veterans and local students too. His philosophy? Use slow times to teach, grow your team, and plant seeds for the future. He’s even fixing ice cream trucks just to keep the doors swinging and the lights on.

More Revenue Stream Ideas We Covered:

  • Storage rentals for vehicles (yes, that’s a thing and it works)

  • Second-opinion inspections before used car purchases

  • Detailing as an upsell or stand-alone service

  • Rental cars, shuttle vans, and concierge-style service

  • Why most shops should NOT dive into ADAS calibration unless they’re ready to go all in

  • The underappreciated value of social media in testing new services

Start with What You Have

The takeaway? It all starts with taking inventory:

  • What space do you have?

  • What equipment is gathering dust?

  • What services are you already doing but not promoting?

Both Bill and Tyson underscored something I’ve seen in a lot of successful shops: don’t try to be everything to everyone. Instead, leverage what you’re already good at, look for natural extensions, and make sure your community knows what you offer.

Also—and this is big—if you’re offering a new service like pre-owner inspections or light detailing, put it on your website. Or at the very least, talk about it on your socials. Customers can’t buy what they don’t know exists.
